Life in the Caribbean

It's hard to believe we have already been in Martinique for almost a whole week now! All of the small fears I had as we were flying into Fort-de-France on a slightly questionable turbo prop, are all but gone. The intense sun has basically melted them away! I have found that no matter what, I AM going to look like a foreigner but I think it is fun to be a foreinger because then people are curious, ask questions and it is a great opportunity to practice speaking French. Even in the past five days I have found that speaking and actually having a conversation is slowly getting easier, especially with my host family who are, thankfully, incredibly patient with my poor sentence formation! Not only are they helpful with improving my French (which is most important right?) but they are so nice my host mom feeds me so well! The fresh fruit is unreal-it's going to be hard to eat bananas when I get home much less find any guavas or good coconut! Every meal there is something new. I am hoping for a few cooking lessons and to learn some recipes this weekend!
The past few days have been awesome. The best by far however, not so much school related, was yesterday...Mangofil! In other words, a crazy high ropes course through the tropical forest. I have a few bruises to show for it but it was totally worth the two hours spent zipling through the trees! I would have to say that our first swim in Caribbean was a pretty amazing as well! The sun was setting, the water was warm and the black sand was soft on my feet...and it was January 10th. Needless to say it was a pretty great way to spend an afternoon.                                                                                                                    I am just so excited to be here! I never thought I would be spending an entire month being able to actually live in a country like this soaking up the culture, the language and the sun. I do not even know what to expect in the coming weeks but I am so excited for all the experiences ahead of us!

A tout a l'heure!
